 Many OFW go to other countries looking for a job that will help them live a better life. But there is a common misconception that their life is filled with luxury and fun.

Here are the things that overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) won’t tell you.

1. They actually don’t have tons of money. To work abroad is to prosper quickly. However, OFWs have a harder life abroad than in their homeland given that they send most of their earnings to those who they left behind.

2. Everything from that ‘balikbayan’ box is their sweat and blood. It feels fantastic when your mom who works abroad messages you that she’ll be sending a package with your requested garments and pair of shoes. But bear in mind that along with all the stuff inside that box are the sacrifices your mom exerted.

3. Yes, they starve themselves sometimes. It’s sad but it’s true that our loved ones who work abroad sometimes skip meals to save some extra money.


4. They crave Filipino food. You may think that they are living the dream overseas by eating sumptuous dishes like what we see in Western films. But no, because they actually crave for Filipino food.

5. Watching Filipino movies or shows is a real struggle. OFW’s still prefer to watch and keep up with Filipino movies and series, but it’s hard to even watch one.

6. Health is wealth for OFWs…literally. Health facilities abroad are expensive.


7. They get extra jobs. Extra job is a must for OFWs, but sometimes these jobs are risky.
